Walt Disney’s Golden Oak Ranch, located in Santa Clarita, California has been used for film production since the 1950s. The rustic setting, sweeping vistas and ability to build large-scale sets have made Golden Oak Ranch an important location for outdoor film, television, and commercial productions. Despite these advantages, the lack of indoor production space limits the usability of this location. Disney | ABC Studios at The Ranch have created a major new movie and TV studio by combining the benefits of a large outdoor filming venue with a highly controlled and efficient indoor soundstages complex.
The plan preserves the natural setting of Golden Oak Ranch and Placerita Canyon by locating the studio with its soundstages in the westernmost portion of the property, adjacent to the State Route 14 freeway. The plan calls for a minimum of eight and maximum of twelve, twenty thousand square foot television stages with production offices attached to the exterior walls to provide convenient access from staff offices to the studio while giving the sound stage a smaller scaled façade. Studio mill facilities have a central location to the sound stages. Studio administration and producer bungalows as well as amenities such as the commissary and gym are located overlooking the natural stream course of the canyon below. The vegetation and natural open space of Placerita Creek are an amenity to the adjoining studio complex, and the extensive habitat restoration plan is designed to restore, revegetate, and enhance the natural environment with native and riparian plant species.
