Aetna Golf Resort

Location: Pope Valley, California, USA

Johnson Fain was commissioned to provide visioning and architectural design services to restore the historic Napa Valley-based Aetna Springs as a premier resort. The golf clubhouse recalls the quintessential North Bay style, relying heavily on wood construction that reflects the highly detailed craftsmanship of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The clubhouse offers state-of-the-art amenities while preserving the character of the legendary resort and a bygone era. Taking cues from the Bernard Maybeck-designed Dining Hall on the site, the clubhouse features large exposed wood trusses, stone columns, fireplaces and generously-scaled chandeliers. The sweeping verandas and expansive glass walls provide natural light and panoramic views of the restored historic golf course and the rolling hills surrounding the northern Napa County property. Inventive details and a rich array of materials provide the clubhouse with a distinctive and consistent character.

The clubhouse’s materials, structure and siting celebrate the historic golf course and the area’s natural beauty. Working with Johnson Fain, noted gold course designer, Tom Doak, meticulously restored the original nine-hole course, the oldest on the West Coast. The two-story clubhouse contains a main dining hall, lounge, bar, pro shop and locker rooms, and is the social center of this restored resort community.
