Location: Monterey, California

This winery, master planned to accommodate an ultimate crush of 38,000 tons of grapes per year, is located on a 376-acre vineyard on Gloria Camphora Road, north of Highway 101, in the heart of the coastal wine making region of Monterey County. The plan anticipates activities common to all Robert Mondavi wineries including receiving and crushing, fermentation and aging, packaging and shipping. With the success of the Robert Mondavi “Coastal” brand, this winery is envisioned as the production, marketing and imaging headquarters for this brand. The winery includes a self-contained visitor center to accommodate the crowds anticipated for Monterey County wine tourism and reflects the Mondavi philosophy of the importance of educating the public in the wine making process. The architecture highlights the route by careful building shaping and materials placement, providing viewing opportunities within, in order to put the wine making processes “on display”. With the ultimate build-out of over 350,000 square feet of one-story buildings, the roof shapes, materials, and massing are important in providing an appropriate scale for this large facility.
