Great Wall Winery, Hotel and Visitor Center
Location: Changli, Qinhuangdao, China
Client: China National Cereals, Oils and Foodstuffs Corporation (COFCO)
The new buildings at the Great Wall Winery and Visitors Center in Hebei Province, China are located at the top of an expansive vineyard and adjacent to the existing winery originally founded in the mid-1980’s. Johnson Fain was commissioned to design a new 140,000 square foot central winery complex that connects the old buildings to the new, provides a comprehensive winery tour including both, and showcases winemaking, banquets and conferences, with 60 deluxe guest rooms and hospitality support. The configuration of the building plan was designed to follow the topography of the sloping terrain and to position the floor levels so that connecting the new Visitors Center and the pre-existing buildings occurs all at one level without grade changes. This effort results in a long and serpentine architecture whose corniced roofline is perfectly level and horizontal against the background of rolling vineyards.
