Roy Romer Middle School
Location: North Hollywood, California, USA
Client: Los Angeles Unified School District
The Roy Romer Middle School is located at the intersection of Laurel Canyon Boulevard and Hamlin Street in the San Fernando Valley. The site’s surroundings include the 170 Freeway located a quarter-mile west of the site, commercial and residential neighborhoods and air traffic from nearby Van Nuys and Burbank Airports. The L-shaped site is comprised of nine-and-a-half acres and is bounded by single-family residences to the west.
The new Middle School accommodates 1,600 students in 160,000 square feet of enclosed space. Campus buildings are organized around a large public square that serves as the school’s entry and major outdoor social center. Accessed from Laurel Canyon Boulevard, the square is defined by a 97,000-square-foot Classroom and Administration Wing to the north, a 25,000-square-foot, two-story multi-purpose building along the south and a two-story 6,000 square-foot Multi-Media Center at the northwest corner. A fourth building, a 19,000-square-foot gymnasium, is located between parking and the playing field that extends from the plaza at the east to the westerly border of the site. The plan diagram for the project is a series of north-south building and landscape zones that create privacy and a variety of intimate spaces for small-group activity and instruction.
