Capitol Area East End Complex
Location: Sacramento, California
Client: County of Solano
Located at the easterly terminus of Capitol Park, this project is an ambitious multi-block mixed-use development that consolidated the headquarters operations of three major departments of California State government. 6400 employees of the Department of Health & Human Services, Education and General Services are housed in the five-building, 1.5-million-square foot complex along with 1,500 parking spaces.
The California Department of Education Headquarters, Block 225, was the first of this five-building development to be completed. Johnson Fain acted as the master design architect that included site planning and interior design. At 336,000 square feet and 6 stories, Block 225 was the largest project worldwide at the time to receive a LEED Gold certification after completion and has since been upgraded to Platinum status. The Departments of Health & Human Services and General Services are housed in the second portion of the Capitol Area East End Complex and have received LEED Silver ratings.
Public amenities include retail, a community police station, a 300-seat auditorium, and a childcare center for up to 100 infants, toddlers, and preschoolers including outdoor play area. Previously, employees were located in over 20 properties throughout the region. In consolidating staff into the new complex, the state has vacated rental space, increased employee productivity, and located 6,400 employees within walking distance of the central city, services, and major public transportation systems.
