Veterans Affairs Campus Master Plan Wins APA LA Urban Design of Excellence Award

Veterans Affairs Campus Master Plan in West Los Angeles, California is the winner of the APA Los Angeles Awards. The Draft Master Plan is a framework that will guide VA in determining and implementing the most effective use of the campus for Veterans, particularly for homeless Veterans, including underserved populations such as female Veterans, aging Veterans, and those who are severely physically or mentally disabled.

Runway Playa Vista Wins Multifamily Executive Project of The Year Award

Runway at Playa Vista is the winner of the Multifamily Executive Magazine Project of the Year Award in the Mid-Rise (4-7 story) category. Designed for Lincoln Property Company, Phoenix Property Company, and Paragon Commercial Group, the dense vertical mixed-use urban community is a vibrant destination for locals of Silicon Beach to shop, dine, entertain, live and work. A collection of open spaces and expansive public artworks are as key to the project’s authenticity and flow as are the commercial and residential elements. The complex includes 217 residences, over 200,000 square feet of lifestyle commercial tenants including a Whole Foods Market and CineMark Theater, and over 30,000 square feet of creative office space.

Kinect Furniture Exhibit at Johnson Fain

On October 11, 2017, Johnson Fain hosted the exhibition of KINECT, the latest yearly collection of furniture designs by members of its Architecture, Urban Design + Planning, and Interior Design studios. When not designing buildings, architects and designers have demonstrated creativity through the design of well-crafted objects. Our studio was open to guests for the evening to celebrate these designs with their authors.

Suma Spina, AIA Promoted to Principal

JOHNSON FAIN is pleased to announce SUMA SPINA, AIA has been promoted to Principal and will lead the Interior Design Studio within the firm. Suma has over twenty years of professional experience in interior design and architecture. In her ten years at Johnson Fain, Suma has been involved in all aspects of the design process through construction for a variety of building types including creative office, schools, hospitality, residential, and civic projects. Johnson Fain recognizes Suma for her leadership, accomplishments and commitment to the progressive values of the firm.

Construction Underway at Great Wall Winery

JOHNSON FAIN is pleased to announce construction is underway on the GREAT WALL WINERY HOTEL AND VISITOR CENTER in Changli, Qinhuangdao, China. Designed for China National Cereals, Oils and Foodstuffs Corporation (COFCO), the 14,000 square meter building is located within the estate vineyard adjacent to the existing winery and includes a 59-room hotel and visitor center with tasting rooms, banquet halls, event space, and tour facilities. Nestled into the existing hillside topography, the serpentine building plan captures panoramic views of the vineyards below. The use of native building materials and plantings allow the building to harmoniously connect to the distinctive landscape, offering visitors an immersive vineyard experience.

Christ Cathedral Breaks Ground

JOHNSON FAIN is pleased to announce the commencement of construction to transform the iconic Crystal Cathedral in Garden Grove, California to CHRIST CATHEDRAL for the ROMAN CATHOLIC DIOCESE OF ORANGE. Originally designed by Philip Johnson and John Burgee for Reverend Robert Schuller, the building will undergo extensive improvements to the all-glass 2,000 seat interior. The new design addresses the requirements of the Catholic liturgy as well as increased sunlight and acoustic control and environmental comfort. Landscape design is by RCHS. Snyder Langston is the building contractor. The Diocese intends to dedicate Christ Cathedral in 2019.
