Johnson Fain, in association with International Parking Design, worked with UCSB’s Extended Learning Services (Extension) and Office of Parking Services to prepare a Detailed Project Program (DPP) for new instructional, office, and parking facilities to serve the west end of the core campus. The site fronts on the Pardall Corridor, a major east-west circulation spine linking the campus core with Isla Vista to the west, and is a significant gateway to the campus. The building solution was presented in a range of options, with variations on the configuration and size of the proposed parking structure, site area covered, points of access, offsite development, and number of levels above and below grade. All were designed to a fixed budget target and ranged in parking capacity from 850 to 1,100 cars. In all of the options, the Extended Learning Services Building (ELSB) is ‘laminated’ to the south side of the parking structure to present an active face to the Pardall Corridor. The ELSB includes three high-tech classrooms with a 100-seat auditorium, and flexible teleconference facilities, shared support facilities, and office space for faculty, administration, finance and budget, marketing, information systems, program development, and student services. The classrooms and shared facilities are programmed to provide 6,500 square feet with office space to provide 6,000 square feet.
